Imagine finding this letter in your mail one day.
Even worse, imagine that you're living abroad, and your IRS mail is sitting in some pile at a relative's home back in the US. You wouldn't even be aware of the serious situation unfolding. The IRS can even revoke your passport if you have $52,000 or more in debt.
This actual letter was received by a client of mine for a prior year tax debt. Actually, it was mailed to me - when the client filed last year, he had authorized me through a taxpayer information authorization (form 8821) to receive a copy of all IRS correspondence mailed to him.
He was completely unaware of this tax debt (an attempted payment years ago had been rejected, and he was unaware).
I was able to bring the gravity of the situation to his attention, and he was able to quickly take care of his debt before more penalties would accumulate.
As standard procedure, all my clients are provided this monitoring service, at no extra cost. While others charge a premium for this service, I view this as an essential part of a tax accountant's job.
