When can you file your 2023 Tax Return?
Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, is the official start date of the 2024 tax season when the IRS will begin accepting and processing 2023 tax returns.
If you are expecting to receive a W-2 from your job, you should receive it by the end of January. Same for form 1099-NEC, for independent contractors, as well as 1099-INT and DIV for interest and dividends.
Consolidated 1099 forms from brokerage firms are due to be available by Feb. 15, 2024.
K-1 forms usually take a bit longer to receive- even as late as April or later. You may need to file an extension if you expect to get this form, for instance from a real estate syndication.
If you are self-employed only, and don't expect to receive any of these forms, you are ready to file as soon as your 2023 profit and loss statement, with categorized expenses, is available.
For US persons in Israel, Form 106 (year-end wage summary) should be available to you by the end of March.
Returns can actually already be sent in to the IRS through professional software, but they will have to wait to be processed until Jan. 29.
