Some IRS agents can make up non-existent laws.

Some IRS agents can make up non-existent laws.

For instance, one client of mine had a baby in August of 2021. The parents would be eligible to claim the 2021 recovery rebate credit (also known as the COVID stimulus payment).

They claimed this credit, and it was denied. When the client called the IRS, he was told that since the child had not yet been born when the recovery rebate of 2021 was originally issued, (March 2021), the child wasn't eligible.

However, there is absolutely no mention of this condition in the law. Quite the contrary, it states that as long as a social security number was issued before the due date of the return, dependents are eligible.

We made a conference call to the IRS, and when the agent adamantly stated why the child "wasn't eligible", I explained to him how no such law exists.

After much time on hold, he finally got back to us and agreed to approve the credit.

Imagine how many people may have missed out due to that agent's mistake.
