Imagine getting another $4000 refund for having another accountant review your return!

This story happened today:

When people come to me for help with an ITIN number application (US tax ID for non citizens), it's normally required to be filed along with a tax return.

Many times, they already have a return prepared by another accountant.

Part of my service is to review the tax return to make sure the ITIN application won't be rejected based on a problematic return.

Another extra service is that I analyze to see if the other accountant claimed all the credits or exclusions the taxpayer may be eligible for.

If the return was prepared by a US based accountant, it's automatically suspect. Most US based accountants don't have much experience dealing with expat or non resident, non citizen returns.

Often, they inadvertently leave out certain credits.

In this case, the foreign income exclusion had been left out, resulting in a low refund amount. After bringing it to the client's attention, their accountant fixed it up.

It's always a good idea to use a professional with special expertise in whatever niche service you may need.
