The IRS is no longer sending refund checks starting 9/30/25 due to a Presidential executive order.

So far, there has not been any exception listed for taxpayers living abroad who don't have a US bank account.

Nor has there been any indication that payments start being possible to foreign bank accounts.

This could cause real trouble for people living abroad.

I would recommend setting up a Wise, Revolut or other similar easy to open online US bank account which provides routing and account information for use in direct deposits.

In a way, this is a very good thing - people will be forced to open these accounts, which will completely end the issue of lost or stolen checks.
